DO I QUALIFY FOR THE STUDY?
The Canadian Healthy Infant Longitudinal Development (CHILD) Study is a national study of 5,000 children born in different provinces across Canada. The CHILD Study is currently recruiting pregnant women to join the study.
If you answer yes to the following three questions we invite you to contact a recruitment centre to find out more information about the CHILD Study:
- Do you anticipate giving birth in one of our recruitment hospitals located in Vancouver, Edmonton, Winnipeg or Toronto ?
- Are you 18 years of age or older (19 in Vancouver) ?
- Are you pregnant and less than 30 weeks into your pregnancy ?
If you answer yes to all three questions you are invited to contact a recruiting centre Vancouver, Edmonton, Winnipeg or Toronto.
WHAT IS INVOLVED IN PARTICIPATING?
For the parents, we will ask you a series of questions about your health and family history. A blood test will let us see what genetic factors are common to you and your baby. A breathing test will measure how well your lungs work. Skin tests will see if you have any allergies. We would like to learn about your home environment to understand what you are exposed to in your surroundings. For more information for mom or dad along with a schedule of visits please select the blue tabs in the left menu.
For baby, we will record the delivery details and request a cord blood sample (which is normally discarded) for genetic and immune testing. We will see your baby at 3 months in your home and then at the clinic at ages 1, 3 and 5 near their birthday. We will follow your child and complete various breathing tests and questionnaires on a regular basis. For more information and schedule of visits please select the blue tab in the left menu.
WHY YOUR FAMILY IS IMPORTANT!
Without the help of our volunteer participants, we could not do this research. Your families time and commitment may help improve the long term health of newborns, and mothers (and maybe even fathers). For example, the study will potentially influence home building codes, air quality policy, and provide better mental health, diet and education strategies for new moms.
We thank you for considering our project and will do our best to make this an enjoyable and rewarding experience.
