What Is Involved In Participating?

For the parents, we will ask you a series of questions about your health and family history. A blood test will let us see what genetic factors are common to you and your baby. A breathing test will measure how well your lungs work. Skin tests will see if you have any allergies. We would like to learn about your home environment to understand what you are exposed to in your surroundings.

For baby, we will record the delivery details and request a sample of cord blood (which is normally discarded) for genetic and immune testing. We will see your baby at 3 months in your home and then at the clinic at ages 1, 3, and 5 near their birthday. We will follow your child and complete various breathing and allergy tests and questionnaires on a regular basis.

Why YOUR Family is Important!

Without the help of our volunteer participants, we could not do this research. Your families time and commitment may help improve the long term health of newborns, and mothers (and maybe even fathers). For example, the study will potentially influence home building codes, air quality policy, and provide better mental health, diet and education strategies for new moms.

We thank you for considering our project and will do our best to make this an enjoyable and rewarding experience.
